Stef Jacobs (Antwerp, 1970) creates a distinctive artistic universe where painting, printmaking and sculpture converge. Raised as the fourth generation of a family of printers, he developed an early fascination with form, colour and the tactile qualities of traditional printing. This graphic heritage remains at the core of his artistic practice, where layered printing techniques, pure primary colours and controlled chance result in works that leave room for the viewer's imagination.
At the heart of his oeuvre lies L'Ecurie de Marcelo, an imaginary world inhabited by unique horse sculptures, each with its own identity, lineage and story. Every handcrafted work belongs to an ever-evolving "bloodline", inspired by cultures, traditions and encounters from around the world. These horses serve as metaphors for the human condition: seemingly alike, yet each carrying its own character and history.
Through his concept of the Evohippus, Jacobs explores how art, like culture itself, is in a constant state of transformation. His sculptures are not static objects but vessels for new meanings that evolve alongside their surroundings. In doing so, he invites viewers not only to observe the work, but to actively participate in shaping its significance. For Stef Jacobs, art is never an endpoint, but the beginning of a story that continuously unfolds.
