Mariela Garibay (Lima, Peru – 1976) graduated in sculpture from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) and in urban design from the University of Barcelona.

She was awarded the Winternitz Prize twice, in 1997 and 1999, and won first prize in the national drawing competition in 2005. Her first solo exhibition took place in 2004, with stone as her primary medium.

Mariela tells us that sculpture is not just form, but also the language the artist has chosen to communicate and the result of a process of preliminary internalisation of the message she conveys. Sculpture is a discipline that requires patience, many hours of work and love. Love for the idea, the work, the message and the unknown person who will one day discover it. This is essential to the success of the work.

Months can pass between the creation of a sketch and the realisation of the sculpture. Sculpture is a slow but steady process. All the hours of reflection, maturation, work and love invested make me aware of the value of things, the artist admits.

Her sculptures are figurative but not realistic; Mariela Garibay observes the world around her and captures it with great tenderness through childlike figures. Mariela Garibay’s art is positive and generous; it immortalises a moment of happiness captured by the artist—a peaceful moment, a fond memory, a smile, a surprise, a simple and sincere joy.
