ABOUT THE ARTIST

HORUS GALLERY

Mathieu Bassez grew up in Ghent, the city of the Flemish Primitives, Van Eyck, Rubens and Breughel. He started painting at an early age, but his passion for art was only really ignited during his university studies.

Mathieu Bassez unites the refinement of Japanese art with the richness of the European Renaissance. With red as the all-important colour-symbol of life, love, but also of strength and transience.

He paints on handmade Flemish linen, in one refined layer of oil paint, with the precision of an old master. The minute details and intense contrasts invite the viewer to not only look at his work, but almost feel it.
